My company prepares candidates for law enforcement interviews from entry level through Police Chief and all ranks in between.

Over my 25 year career from 1988-2013 I interviewed at the entry level position, Sergeant, Captain, Deputy Police Chief and Police Chief ranks. I had great success which led me to the rank of Police Chief at age 42.

As I prepare my clients at very different levels of their law enforcement careers, I recognize and reaffirmed to myself that the subject matter may differ, but what enhances a # 1 candidates score is their preparation.

To succeed in a law enforcement oral interview you must look the part and sound the part. It is that simple. This is where your success in the process will begin once you understand it is not necessarily what you say, but HOW you say it, convincingly. And how you say something with a resounding confidence and conviction.

Your oral interview is a performance. And to perform at a high level you must be prepared not only technically, but generically, which includes your general physical appearance and proper vocabulary to grab the interviewer’s attention.

You must stand out from the crowd of applicants from the moment you walk in to the room in your business attire, during the complete process, all the way through to your last cordial “thank you” to the interviewer.

Of course, the content of an interview will vary between an entry level candidate and a Police Chief candidate.

The bottom line is the oral interview is your chance to stand out from other applicants, and to look the part and sound the part of the position you wish to attain.

Do not overly concern yourself with specific test/interview questions and subject matter areas. Conversely, you must train yourself to answer ANY question as if you are an expert on the subject matter.

In other words, it is a performance you must be eager to engage with enthusiasm and predetermined strategies that will make you the best candidate.

The beauty of being well prepared for your interview is being eager to answer any and ALL questions that are directed toward you with command presence and with confidence.

The first advice I have for any client is not to be concerned with the questions you will be asked, but prepare yourself to answer any question in a way that will be concise, on point and with full confidence.

When you speak you must pause, think and speak in a methodical tone. Maintain eye contact at all times with the interviewer and have an open posture. Inflect your voice and pay attention to the wording of the questions. Be organized and talk in a way that it is easy to understand.

Preparation for an oral interview can be accomplished in a mere few hours for any level of law enforcement. It is a mindset. It is a guide to verbal and non-verbal cues that will enhance your score. All of the strategies employed are time tested and easy to remember and recall.

I am a huge proponent of the acronym “K.I.S.S. – keep it simple stupid”. It is a mantra I live by. Keep your responses short, to the point, with minimal elaboration. When you are asked a question ALWAYS pause, think and then speak in a methodical tone.

LESS is BETTER in an interview. Give the interviewer what they want and get in and out of every question unscathed. Be direct, be vivid and paint a verbal picture of the ideal candidate you present yourself to be, all the while enhancing your score and chances to attain your law enforcement career position.

Once you learn your basic verbal and non verbal responses to any question and understand you must look the part and sound the part of the title you aspire to attain, THEN you may move on to the technical questions that may be asked.

Entry level questions may include:

Tell us what you know about our department?

What skills do you have that would benefit our agency?

Which is more important: creativity or efficiency? Why?

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. What are some of yours?

Interviews for Police Sergeant through Police Chief may include:

Give an example of interpersonal conflict you have experienced and the nature of the disagreement. How did you resolve it?

What actions will you take at a police officer involved domestic violence call?

What are the levels of force a police officer may use as per the law and applicable guidelines?

My company prepares candidates ONE on ONE for oral interviews at any level for any type of test situation.

My strategies are easy to learn and easy to apply.

I simplify the process and streamline your approach to enhance your score and realize your law enforcement career goals.
